Chapter 13 - EMILY CARTER’S HOUSE

I renovated the outdoor sink area.
Not because I could not tolerate seeing it.
Because I hated the design.
We removed the old utility counter.
Added cabinets.
Better lighting.
A proper garden prep station.
The first time Rachel saw it months later during a supervised family gathering, she stopped.
“You changed it.”
“Yes.”
She looked embarrassed.
“Good.”
Our relationship did not magically recover.
For a long time, she came only when invited.
Never arrived with dirty dishes.
Never ordered staff.
Never commented on my role in the house.
Linda did not enter for almost a year.
That was partly my choice.
When I eventually allowed her back, she stood inside the foyer.
“May I come in?”
The question nearly made me cry.
Not because it erased anything.
Because she had never asked before.
“Yes.”
She entered.
No key.
May you like
I had changed every lock.
Family no longer meant automatic access.
