Chapter 11 - The Woman Across the Street

Eleanor Vale was eighty-two.

My goal was to find out what she saw the night Noah died.

Under the name Ellen Webb, she had lived near Amber for years.

She sometimes watched Lily after school.

Amber never knew she was Lily’s biological grandmother.

Nathan had placed his mother near Lily to monitor her.

Eleanor admitted Noah called her terrified the night he died.

She followed him.

At a gas station, she saw Nathan arguing with Noah.

She saw Nathan open the hood.

She did nothing.

Nathan later convinced her the crash was accidental.

Years later, when Lily was born, he let Eleanor have contact only if she remained silent.

Then Caleb arrived.

Nathan told her the boy would “finish what Noah started.”

She finally understood the children were not heirs.

They were evidence.

If the revoked will surfaced, Lily and Caleb proved Nathan knowingly violated Noah’s wishes.

Custody was not just about money.

It was evidence suppression.

Then Eleanor revealed why Nathan chose Liberty Oak Park.

He needed me to act violently on camera.

A civil hearing was already scheduled for Monday.

Nathan had filed to place the Vale estate under protective trusteeship.

His petition claimed the maternal family was unstable.

The park footage was designed to show me attacking Amber.

Amber drugging Caleb was only half the scene.

My shove was the other half.

I had done exactly what Nathan predicted.

The full park server was remotely wiped before police could preserve it.

But Lily had been filming ducks on her tablet.

Her video continued through the first seconds of the confrontation.

Before I arrived, Amber spoke to Nathan on speakerphone.

Amber:

“What if Caleb stops breathing?”

Nathan:

“Then we improvise.”

Then a second male voice said:

“She’ll take the bait. She always does.”

I recognized it.

Mark.
