Chapter 9 - My Mother’s Backup Plan
My goal was to understand why Mom had discussed raising both children as if Amber could simply disappear.
Nathan approached her after Lily was born.
He said the Vale estate could secure everyone’s future.
At first, Mom believed the plan was legitimate.
Then she learned Noah’s genetic material had been used without informed consent.
She wanted to report Nathan.
Dad stopped her because he had already accepted money from Nathan years earlier.
Our parents chose silence.
Nathan used that silence against them.
Mom said the “backup” conversation happened after Amber threatened to expose him.
Nathan asked what would happen to Lily if Amber were arrested.
Mom said I would probably raise her.
Nathan turned that sentence into a contingency plan.
Then the detective played the rest.
Nathan:
“And Sarah?”
Mom:
“She’ll do what she always does. She’ll take care of everyone.”
Nathan:
“Even if she hates us?”
Mom:
“Especially then.”
Nathan had built the plan around my sense of responsibility.
If Amber fell, I would take Lily.
If I fell, Amber would take Caleb.
Either way, both Vale heirs remained controlled inside one family.
Then Mom produced Dad’s second recorder.
On it, Dad confronted Amber the night before he died.
Dad:
“Amber, you need to leave.”
Amber:
“I can’t. He knows about Lily.”
Dad:
“Then we protect both girls.”
Amber had gone to Dad for help.
She was not part of his death.
Then a crash sounded.
A third voice appeared outside the office.
Nathan.
Amber finally confessed.
She saw Nathan inject Dad.
She ran.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because Nathan told me he’d take Lily and make it look like I killed Dad.”
Then she revealed why Nathan let her live.
Dad had put a safe-deposit key in her hand moments before Nathan arrived.
Amber gave the key to Nathan to save Lily.
