Chapter 8 - Lily Was First

My goal was to determine whether Amber knew Lily’s biological father was Noah.
She did not.
At least not at first.
Amber was finally located in a motel.
She surrendered without resistance.
“Is Caleb alive?”
Her concern sounded real.
During interrogation, she admitted Nathan arranged fertility treatment nine years earlier and told her the donor was anonymous.
She learned the truth when Lily was three.
Nathan told her Lily could inherit a smaller branch of Noah’s estate, but a future male heir would control the main forty million.
Then Caleb was born.
Nathan became obsessed.
He needed Lily and Caleb under one legal household.
Amber’s.
That explained the guardianship plot.
Then I asked the only question that mattered.
“Did you drug Caleb?”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No denial.
“I thought the dose was safe.”
“You poisoned my son.”
“Nathan told me it would make him sleep.”
“You tested it on him Tuesday.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
I nearly lunged across the table.
Amber said the park plan was meant to make it look as though I accidentally gave Caleb my medication. CPS would remove him temporarily. She would petition as family. Nathan would alter the DNA record.
Then Amber admitted Lily had to witness the collapse because Nathan wanted a child witness.
But Lily refused the script.
She cried out that “Mom” said it was a prank.
That one word broke the frame.
Then police found a file in Nathan’s storage office:
LILY CONTINGENCY.
It contained a guardianship petition naming me as Lily’s emergency mother if Amber became “noncompliant.”
Nathan had prepared to take Amber’s daughter too.
I thought Amber was his partner—but she was disposable.
Then investigators found a recording of Nathan speaking to a woman.
“If Amber panics, Sarah can raise both children.”
The woman answered:

“She’ll do what she always does. She’ll take care of everyone.”
I recognized my mother’s voice.
