Chapter 4 - The Signature at Birth
I had never seen Amber at the hospital that night.
My goal was to find out what she signed.
Caleb was delivered by emergency C-section.
I remembered almost nothing from the first six hours.
Mom told me Amber stayed home with Lily.
False.
Hospital records showed Amber entered maternity at 1:22 a.m.
At 2:08, she signed a consent for newborn genetic screening.
One extra page authorized “expanded familial compatibility testing.”
No one explained that to me.
The test compared Caleb to me, Dad, and Amber.
Ordering physician: Nathan Vale.
Nathan had no role in my pregnancy.
The raw result showed Caleb matched me as his mother and Dad as close family.
Then Amber’s line appeared.
The report said the shared DNA exceeded a normal aunt-nephew relationship.
The strongest model was mother-child.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
The lab director agreed.
“Unless the samples were mislabeled.”
The sample marked SARAH matched Amber.
The sample marked AMBER was actually mine.
They had reversed us in the genetic system.
Someone had created a hidden record showing Amber as Caleb’s biological mother.
Then investigators found a drafted birth-certificate amendment naming Amber Carter as mother.
My mother finally answered my call.
“Did Amber sign Caleb’s genetic test?”
Silence.
“Mom.”
“She was helping.”
“With what?”
“You had just had surgery.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
When I mentioned Dad’s letter, her voice changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Again, not denial.
Fear.
Then she said, “Sarah, Amber isn’t trying to steal Caleb.”
“Then what is she doing?”
“She thinks she’s protecting what belongs to her.”
“What belongs to her?”
Mom hung up.
