Chapter 12 - The Dead Husband

My goal was to prove whether the voice belonged to Mark.

Audio comparison returned a 96% match.

Mark’s death had been reported as a drowning.

No body recovered.

Boat found empty.

Wallet onboard.

Nathan signed the medical verification.

Facial recognition found a man matching Mark entering Vale Medical Research two months ago.

He was alive.

Police located him in a rented house.

He tried to run.

When I saw him in interrogation, I felt rage before grief.

“You let Caleb think you were dead.”

Mark stared at the table.

“Caleb isn’t my son.”

“He called you Dad.”

That landed.

Mark said Nathan revealed the donor was Noah Vale after my fertility procedure.

Nathan told him I had agreed to donor conception.

I had not.

Mark accepted money and staged his death.

Two months ago, Nathan brought him back because he needed someone who knew my reactions.

Someone who could predict what I would do under pressure.

Mark helped script the park confrontation.

“What did you tell him?”

“That you’d protect Caleb before yourself.”

Nathan used love as a behavioral prediction.

Mark claimed he did not know Amber would actually drug Caleb.

His phone disproved the clean version.

NATHAN:

Dose confirmed. If the boy crashes, keep Sarah away from the bottle.

MARK:

You said no hospital.

NATHAN:

Plans change.

Mark knew there was danger.

He did nothing.

Then his phone revealed something else.

A photograph showed Nathan and Amber at a diner two weeks earlier.

On the table was a federal cooperation agreement.

Amber had already agreed to testify against Nathan before the park.

I thought she was simply following his orders—but she had been secretly building a case against him.

Then why drug Caleb?

The missing page of her agreement answered that.
