Chapter 5 - The Payment from Dad

My goal was to understand how a dead man’s account was still moving money.

Robert Carter’s trust had never closed.

A trustee continued making payments.

To Amber.

To Dr. Vale.

To a private genetics lab.

And once, to Mom.

The trust held almost eight million dollars.

I had never heard of it.

The last payment to Amber was made two weeks ago.

Reference:

Caleb contingency.

Mom arrived at the hospital.

I put the statements in front of her.

“Tell me everything.”

She sat.

Then she broke the first family story.

“Robert was not Amber’s biological father.”

Amber and I had grown up as sisters.

Same parents.

Same house.

But Mom said Amber was conceived before she met Dad.

The biological father was Nathan Vale.

Dr. Vale.

The doctor helping Amber.

Her biological father.

Dad discovered the truth years after adopting her.

Nathan paid him millions to keep the paternity secret because Nathan was married into a powerful hospital family.

Dad put most of the money into trust for Amber.

Then Mom revealed why Caleb mattered.

When I became pregnant, Nathan demanded a DNA test.

His father had supposedly left an inheritance passing through a direct male descendant.

Caleb was male.

But not Amber’s child.

Unless they made him legally hers.

The swapped DNA created the illusion.

Then Mom whispered, “That’s what Robert believed.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your father discovered the inheritance documents were fake.”

Nathan had been using the inheritance story to push Amber toward a legal parenthood claim.

Before Dad exposed why, he died.

Heart attack.

Death certificate signed by Nathan.

Mom looked at me.

“I don’t think Robert died naturally.”

The original funeral photographs showed a puncture mark below Dad’s left ear.
