Chapter 10 - THE FIRE AT THE SUMMER HOUSE

Rachel did not burn the archive immediately.

She demanded immunity and access to a protected account.

Authorities refused full immunity.

She released one room at a time.

First, elder-care contracts.

Then replacement identities.

Then medical records.

The archive proved the Carter continuity system had operated for nearly a century.

Women, twins, foster children, and employees were assigned to maintain family names when the “original” person became inconvenient.

Rachel had been promised she could become Evelyn Carter and inherit the matriarch’s rights.

Marcus never intended to honor that promise.

The documents named Claire Dawson as the preferred replacement.

Rachel had been another temporary role.

When she realized it, she turned against Marcus.

She handed over the records.

Then a hidden timer ignited the basement.

Marcus had ordered the fire remotely before his arrest.

Firefighters saved most of the archive.

Rachel escaped alive and entered custody.

No dramatic absolution.

She still helped plan my assault and theft.

Her cooperation changed the sentence, not the truth.

Then investigators recovered one burned page.

EVELYN CARTER — ORIGINAL DECEASED, 1954.

I had been born in 1954.

The record claimed I died as an infant.
