Chapter 3 - THE GIRL NAMED LILY

The child’s name was Lily Reed.
She lived with Anna’s older sister, Claire.
Claire believed Marcus was dead.
Anna told the family he died in a boating accident before Lily was born.
Another false death.
Another life split into separate stories.
Independent DNA confirmed Marcus was Lily’s father.
When Rachel heard, she laughed once.
Not from humor.
From shock so deep it had nowhere else to go.
“You have a daughter?”
Marcus refused to answer.
Rachel had spent eight years believing their son, Carter, was his first child.
Now she learned Marcus had another wife, another child, and another financial life.
That did not make Rachel innocent.
She still kicked legal documents toward a bruised seventy-two-year-old woman and demanded money.
But the alliance between them cracked.
Police arrested Marcus for assault and suspected financial fraud.
Rachel remained free pending investigation.
She immediately blamed him for everything.
Then forensic review of the fake power of attorney showed her fingerprint beneath mine.
She had held the paper in place while someone traced my signature.
The physician’s statement carried her brother’s medical license number.
The conspiracy was family-wide.
Then Claire called.
Anna was alive.
She had been hiding under another name for five years.
She agreed to speak only with me.
We met inside a protected legal office.
Anna walked in wearing a blue coat and holding a folder against her chest.
She looked exhausted.
She looked afraid.
She also looked familiar.
Not because of Marcus.
Because she had my eyes.
Anna placed a birth certificate on the table.
Mother: Evelyn Carter.
Child: Anna Carter.
I stared at her.
“That is impossible.”
She whispered:
May you like
“You are my mother.”
