Chapter 14 - THE HIDDEN OPERATOR
The camera serial number traced to Arthur’s former assistant, Samuel Brooks.
Samuel had disappeared after Arthur’s funeral.
He built the independent security system and monitored it remotely.
Why?
Because Arthur suspected Marcus.
But Samuel had another motive.
He was Anna’s biological father.
Years earlier, Arthur had used Samuel’s stored genetic material in the embryo that produced Anna.
Neither Samuel nor I consented.
The Carter family created children to preserve bloodline and business alliances.
Samuel discovered Anna only after Marcus married her.
He began collecting evidence.
The kitchen camera protected me, but it also documented the family for his private case.
He had watched earlier arguments.
Earlier thefts.
Earlier bruises.
He did not intervene until the trust trigger activated.
When asked why, he said:
“I needed enough proof.”
I answered:
“You had enough the first time Marcus raised his hand.”
Samuel accepted investigation for unlawful surveillance and delayed reporting.
No one became a hero simply because their evidence was useful.
Then he gave us the final footage.
Arthur speaking inside the kitchen one week before his death.
He looked directly at the camera.
“If Evelyn sees this, I failed to tell her everything.”
He placed a legal envelope beneath the pantry floor.
Investigators recovered it.
Inside was a new will.
Arthur left the mansion not to me, Marcus, Anna, or any Carter heir.
He left it to “the first person who refuses the family name.”
The clause was strange.
Then Lily, now seven, stood beside Anna and said:
“I don’t want to be a Carter.”
