Chapter 9 - EVELYN TWO

Her real name was Helen Ward.

Age seventy.

Gray hair.

Similar height.

Similar facial structure.

She had lived in a private residence for fifteen years studying my life.

My recipes.

My speech.

My family history.

My signature.

Marcus planned to introduce her after I “entered long-term care.”

Helen believed she was my biological twin.

Records supported the possibility.

My birth certificate listed a second female infant who died the same day.

No body record existed.

Helen may have been that child.

Or she may have been trained to believe it.

Independent DNA showed we were sisters.

My parents had hidden her for the same reason Arthur’s parents hid Robert.

The Carter trust recognized only one female heir.

Helen spent a lifetime outside the family.

Marcus found her and promised restoration.

She agreed to replace me.

Then she saw the kitchen footage.

My bruised face.

My torn lip.

Marcus’s hand around my dress.

Helen contacted Evelyn Shaw and surrendered.

“I wanted your life,” she told me. “I did not want your pain.”

She provided the final location of Rachel.

The old Carter summer mansion.

Police surrounded it.

Inside, Rachel held legal files and a can of gasoline.

She threatened to burn the identity archive.

Then Marcus called from jail.

The call went directly to the mansion.

He told her:

“Burn everything.”

Rachel looked toward the camera.

And smiled.

Read Chapter 10 to discover why Rachel wanted the archive destroyed.
