Chapter 2 - The Evidence She Forgot To Hide

Vanessa stared at the camera.
That was the moment I knew.
Not because she confessed.
Because she was afraid.
People who are innocent ask questions.
People who are guilty look for exits.
She slowly pulled her wrist away from my hand.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Her voice was calmer now.
Controlled.
That was Vanessa’s greatest talent.
She could turn cruelty into confidence.
She could turn lies into sympathy.
I had watched her convince entire rooms of people that she was the victim.
But I was done listening.
I walked to my mother.
“Mom.”
Margaret looked at me.
Her eyes were full of pain.
Not physical pain.
Something deeper.
“How long?”
She looked away.
That hurt more than any answer.
Elena stepped forward.
“Months.”
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Be quiet.”
Elena flinched.
But she didn’t stop.
“She stopped giving Mrs. Margaret her medication when you were traveling.”
My jaw tightened.
I looked at the empty tray.
The missing bottles.
The details suddenly connected.
Vanessa wasn’t just cruel.
She was patient.
Calculated.
She had built this slowly.
“I trusted you.”
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You trusted everyone except the person actually running your house.”
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Her expression changed.
A small smile.
A dangerous one.
“You think I needed your money?”
Silence.
“You think this was about your mother?”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Because suddenly I realized.
Margaret wasn’t the only target.
Vanessa had something bigger planned.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
My mother’s bedroom.
Taken from inside the house.
With a caption:
“You came back too early.”
I looked toward the hallway camera.
The red light was still blinking.
May you like
Someone had been watching.
