Chapter 7 - The Secret My Mother Carried Alone

I turned toward my mother.

“Mom?”

Margaret looked broken.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because of the truth she had hidden.

“I was protecting you.”

Those words hurt.

Because protection had become another excuse.

Everyone said they were protecting someone.

While causing damage.

She explained.

Years earlier, before Vanessa entered our lives, my mother discovered something about her.

A financial history.

A pattern.

Vanessa had targeted wealthy families before.

Not illegally.

Carefully.

Legally.

Manipulatively.

My mother warned me.

But I didn’t listen.

Because I loved Vanessa.

Because I believed I knew her.

Margaret cried.

“I thought you would leave her.”

I looked at my wife.

“I should have.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

Then my phone received another message.

This time.

A video file.

The sender was unknown.

The first frame showed Vanessa.

Talking to someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Then the audio started.

“I need Daniel gone.”

My blood ran cold.
