Chapter 4 - The Recording Behind The Locked Door

The security technician restored the system remotely.

The hallway camera came back first.

Then the bedroom.

The last seven days appeared.

Everyone stood still.

Nobody wanted to watch.

But we needed to.

The footage started.

My mother alone.

Hours passing.

No water.

No medicine.

No visitors.

Then Vanessa entered.

Every day.

Always checking.

Always controlling.

My hands curled into fists.

Elena looked down.

She had seen this.

She had lived with this.

And she had been afraid.

Vanessa watched the screen.

Her face became harder.

“You don’t understand what you’re seeing.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

I pointed at the screen.

“I understand perfectly.”

The footage continued.

Then something appeared.

A conversation.

Vanessa on the phone.

Talking to someone.

“You promised me the inheritance would be released.”

My breathing stopped.

Inheritance.

So that was it.

Not frustration.

Not stress.

Money.

My mother controlled assets Vanessa wanted.

Assets she couldn’t access while Margaret was alive and competent.

The recording continued.

A voice answered through the phone.

A man.

Unknown.

“Keep Daniel distracted.”

Vanessa smiled.

“I know how to handle my husband.”

The room became silent.

Because I finally understood.

My wife wasn’t hiding an accident.

She was hiding a plan.

Then the recording ended.

The last frame showed Vanessa looking directly at the camera.

Like she knew it existed.

Like she wanted someone to find it.
