Chapter 5 - The Partner Behind Vanessa’s Smile

Vanessa didn’t panic when the recording ended.
That bothered me.
Most people caught doing something terrible would collapse.
Vanessa became calmer.
“You’re emotional.”
I stared at her.
“You hurt my mother.”
She tilted her head.
“You’re choosing a sick old woman over your wife?”
That sentence showed me everything.
She didn’t feel guilty.
She felt offended.
Like my loyalty was something she owned.
The front door alarm suddenly beeped.
Someone had entered the mansion.
I looked toward the hallway.
A man walked in.
My attorney.
The same man who handled my family’s estate.
Vanessa smiled.
“I knew you’d come.”
I looked at him.
“You’re involved?”
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Daniel, you need to understand the situation.”
I almost laughed.
Everyone who betrayed you always starts with those words.
The situation.
The circumstances.
The explanation.
Never the truth.
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Legal preparations.
Financial transfers.
And a plan to declare my mother incapable of managing her own assets.
My mother’s future had been mapped out.
Without her.
Without me.
Then my attorney said something that made Vanessa smile.
“You’re too late.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He placed another document down.
A document with my signature.

Except I never signed it.
