Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Vent

Ryan Carter stopped in the kitchen doorway.
His seventeen-month-old son, Ethan, was kneeling beside the floor vent.
Tiny pieces of bread were scattered across the tile.
Ethan pushed another piece through the metal slats.
“Ethan… what are you doing?”
The little boy spun around.
Fear flashed across his face.
Then he pointed toward the wall.
“She told me not to tell you… but she’s hungry.”
Ryan stared.
“She?”
He moved toward the vent.
Claire rushed in from the hallway.
Too fast.
She stepped between him and the wall.
“Ryan, don’t open it!”
He stopped.
Not because of the words.
Because of her face.
His wife looked terrified.
“Move.”
“Please.”
“Claire.”
She spread her arms wider.
Ryan pushed past her.
Claire stumbled against the counter.
Then everyone froze.
A sound came from inside the wall.
Crying.
Small.
Weak.
Real.
Ryan slowly crouched.
A tiny hand appeared between the vent slats.
Ethan gasped.
Then a little girl’s voice whispered:
“Daddy… please save me.”
Ryan went white.
He turned toward Claire.
“Why did she call me Daddy?”
Claire’s lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Ryan grabbed the screwdriver from the kitchen drawer.
Claire caught his wrist.
“If you open that wall, everything changes.”
Ryan stared at her.
“There’s a child inside.”
“I know.”
That answer hit harder than anything else.
“You know?”
Claire started crying.
Ryan pulled away and removed the vent cover.
Behind it was not solid wall.
It opened into a narrow service passage between the kitchen and old utility room.
A toddler sat inside.
Messy brown hair.
Pale pajamas.
Bare feet.
Thin arms wrapped around herself.
Ryan reached in.
She immediately crawled toward him.
The moment he lifted her, she buried her face against his chest.
“Daddy.”
Ryan’s hands shook.
Claire backed away.
Ethan stood beside him clutching the last piece of bread.
Ryan looked at his wife.
“How long has she been here?”
Claire whispered:
“Three days.”
Ryan nearly stopped breathing.
“Who is she?”
Claire began sobbing.
“I was trying to keep her safe.”
“From who?”
Claire looked straight at him.
May you like
“From you finding out whose daughter she really is.”
👉 Ryan thought the horror was finding a child behind his wall—but Claire’s answer made him realize the girl’s identity could destroy his entire family.
