Chapter 5 - Margaret Had Certified the Lie

Margaret Shaw had signed everything.

Daniel Carter:

No known biological descendants.

Laura Bennett:

No legally acknowledged child connected to Daniel Carter.

Emma Bennett:

Deceased.

All three certifications passed through Margaret.

Ryan looked at Claire.

“She created the entire chain.”

Claire nodded.

“But why?”

Money was the obvious answer.

Except Margaret hadn’t received Daniel’s shares.

Ryan had.

Then forensic accountants found a consulting agreement.

Carter Holdings paid Shaw Medical Consulting $240,000 annually.

Owner:

Margaret Shaw.

Ryan stared.

He had approved those invoices.

Without questioning them.

“They came through finance.”

Claire looked at him.

“You never knew?”

“No.”

Margaret benefited as long as Ryan controlled Daniel’s shares.

If Emma appeared, the trust would be reopened.

Audits would follow.

Margaret’s consulting payments could be challenged.

But $240,000 a year still seemed too small to justify hiding a child.

Then another account surfaced.

Margaret controlled a foundation created using Daniel’s former shares.

Over thirteen million dollars had moved through it.

Ryan felt sick.

Claire whispered:

“She was using your authority.”

He nodded.

Ryan had been chairman.

Margaret had the paperwork.

He signed broad approvals.

She moved money under programs he barely reviewed.

Emma’s existence could trigger an accounting of everything.

Then Ryan asked the hardest question.

“How did Emma end up behind our wall?”

Claire finally told him the full truth.

Three days earlier, Margaret called.

Panicked.

She said someone was investigating Daniel’s estate.

Emma could no longer stay where she had been hidden.

Margaret drove her to Claire’s house.

“Why you?”

“She said if I didn’t hide Emma temporarily, she’d tell police I helped with the original records.”

Ryan stared.

“Did you?”

Claire started crying.

“I signed one form.”

His stomach dropped.

“What form?”

“After Ethan was born, Margaret brought papers to the hospital. She said it corrected a duplicate patient record.”

“What was it?”

“A certification that Emma had died.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Claire had signed it.

Not knowingly.

But she signed it.

“I found out what it really was six months later.”

“And you still said nothing.”

Claire cried harder.

“I was terrified.”

“Of prison?”

“Of losing Ethan.”

Ryan looked away.

That was the first reason he truly understood.

Not excused.

Understood.

Claire continued.

Margaret told her if she confessed, she would be charged and Ethan could be taken during the investigation.

Claire believed her.

Then Emma appeared.

Claire panicked.

She placed her in the service passage overnight while trying to decide what to do.

“One night became three.”

Ryan’s voice hardened.

“You should have called me.”

“I know.”

“Instead Ethan fed her bread through a vent.”

Claire covered her face.

“I know.”

That was the moment Claire stopped defending herself.

Then investigators arrived with news.

Margaret Shaw had disappeared.

Her home was empty.

Her accounts were frozen.

But one security camera had captured her leaving.

She wasn’t alone.

A woman sat in the passenger seat.

Vanessa Carter.
