Chapter 8 - Margaret Burned the Wrong File
Police reached St. Matthew’s before Margaret could destroy everything.
She had accessed archived neonatal files.
Removed three boxes.
Shredded documents.
Deleted local records.
But St. Matthew’s maintained off-site backups.
Margaret had forgotten.
Or never known.
She was arrested for obstruction-related conduct and questioned under counsel.
She refused to discuss Emma.
Then the hospital backups were restored.
They contained the original paternity test request.
Daniel Carter.
Laura Bennett.
Expected child.
And a genetic sample.
Daniel’s stored sample still existed.
Emma was tested under court supervision.
Probability Daniel Carter was her biological father:
99.9996%.
Ryan cried when he saw it.
Not because he lost money.
Because Emma finally had a father’s name that was true.

Claire looked at the report.
“So why did Emma call Ryan Daddy?”
A developmental specialist offered a simple explanation.
Emma had repeatedly been shown Ryan’s family photographs while hidden.
Margaret may have been preparing a story.
Or someone caring for Emma may have referred to Ryan as “Daddy Ryan.”
Toddlers repeat familiar labels.
No mystical recognition.
No impossible memory.
Just a child using the word she had learned.
Ryan was strangely relieved.
The mystery had an ordinary answer.
Then hospital backups revealed the dead-child fraud.
Emma had never died.
Margaret had created a duplicate chart.
Claire had unknowingly signed part of it.
Vanessa had delayed reporting paternity.
Laura’s sister had later been told Emma died during an emergency admission.
That woman had spent a year grieving too.
Her name was Rebecca Bennett.
When she arrived, she saw Emma and collapsed.
Emma stared at her.
Then reached out.
Rebecca sobbed.
“My baby.”
Ryan looked confused.
Rebecca clarified.
“She wasn’t mine biologically. But Laura asked me to raise her.”
For three months after Laura’s death, Rebecca had.
Then Margaret convinced her Emma needed surgery.
Rebecca handed her over.
Emma never came back.
Margaret produced a death certificate.
Rebecca believed it.
Ryan felt sick.
Another grieving adult.
Another life rewritten by paperwork.
Then Rebecca revealed something.
Before Emma vanished, Laura had mailed her a letter.
Rebecca kept it.
Laura wrote:
If anything happens to me, Daniel’s brother Ryan is the only Carter I trust to do the right thing.
Ryan had never met Laura outside work.
Yet she chose him.
Why?
Because Daniel told her Ryan was different.
Ryan looked at Emma.
For the first time, the word Daddy hurt less.
Maybe he wasn’t her father.
But he could still protect her.
Then the trust attorney called.
Vanessa had filed an emergency challenge to Daniel’s amendment.
She claimed Emma’s existence should not alter the inheritance because Daniel never publicly acknowledged her.
