Chapter 9 - Ryan Took Emma’s Side
Vanessa’s attorney made the argument.
Daniel’s amendment was private.
Unsigned by a corporate trustee.
Never formally filed before death.
Therefore, its effect was disputed.
Ryan’s attorney said:
“She may have a legal argument.”
Ryan hated hearing that.
But legal disputes weren’t solved by outrage.
So he did something Vanessa didn’t expect.
He voluntarily froze the shares he inherited from Daniel.
No dividends to himself.
No voting use for his personal advantage.
Until the court determined rightful ownership.
Vanessa called him.
“You’re destroying the company.”
“No.”
“You’re handing control to a toddler.”
“I’m stopping myself from using something that might belong to her.”
“She isn’t your child.”
Ryan looked at Emma playing beside Ethan.
“No.”
Then:
“She’s Daniel’s.”
Silence.
Vanessa snapped:
“Daniel betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“You expect me to reward that?”
“No.”
Ryan’s voice stayed calm.
“But Emma didn’t betray you.”
Vanessa hung up.
Claire watched him.
“That was brutal.”
“She’s angry at Daniel and charging Emma for it.”
Claire looked down.
Ryan knew what she was thinking.
“You did something similar.”
Claire nodded.
“I let fear make decisions for Ethan and Emma.”
Ryan did not tell her it was different.
Some of it was.
Some wasn’t.
Accountability required precision.
Claire had hidden Emma for three days.
Wrong.
Terrifying.
But she hadn’t designed the fifteen-month fraud.
She had been manipulated by Margaret.
The investigation confirmed that.
Still, child welfare authorities required a parenting evaluation because of what happened in the house.
Claire accepted it.
No fighting.
No claiming persecution.
“I made a dangerous choice.”
Ryan respected that more than excuses.
Meanwhile, Rebecca petitioned for restoration of guardianship over Emma.
Ryan supported her.
That surprised everyone.
His attorney asked:
“You don’t want custody?”
Ryan looked at Emma.
“She knows Rebecca.”
“She also bonds with you.”
“That doesn’t make her mine.”
Ryan would remain involved if the court and Rebecca allowed.
But he would not repeat Margaret’s mistake.
A child was not an asset to possess.
Then Daniel’s amendment went through forensic review.
Signature authentic.
Witness authentic.
Metadata consistent.
Daniel’s attorney confirmed he had discussed the document.
The court ruled the amendment valid enough to proceed through full trust review.
Vanessa’s position weakened.
Then something unexpected happened.
She withdrew the challenge.
Ryan called her.
“Why?”
Vanessa sounded exhausted.
“Because I listened to Daniel’s video.”
Silence.
“He said Emma gets what belongs to her.”
Ryan said nothing.
Vanessa continued:
“I’ve spent four years furious at him.”
“You had a right to be.”
“I don’t have a right to make her pay.”
