Chapter 7 - The Red Flash Drive

The flash drive required a password.
Investigators copied it first.
Then Ryan tried obvious possibilities.
Daniel’s birthday.
Laura’s.
Emma’s.
Nothing.
Vanessa suggested:
“CASTLE.”
Wrong.
Claire whispered:
“Try Ethan.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Why?”
“Margaret always said Daniel used family names as passwords.”
Ryan tried:
THOMAS.
Wrong.
Then Emma toddled into the room with a child advocate.
She pointed at the screen.
“Boat.”
Ryan froze.
Daniel died on a boat.
He entered the name of Daniel’s boat:
SECOND CHANCE.
The drive unlocked.
Everyone went silent.
Daniel’s folders contained accounting spreadsheets.
Audio recordings.
Emails.
And one video.
Daniel sat behind his desk.
“Ryan, if you ever see this, I probably failed to fix something.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Daniel explained he had discovered Margaret using Carter trust structures to move money through medical foundations.
He confronted her.
She claimed everything was legal.
Daniel didn’t believe her.
Then he made the mistake of telling Vanessa.
Vanessa begged him not to create another scandal while their marriage was already collapsing.
He waited.
Then Laura helped him copy records.
Daniel planned to tell Ryan.
He died before he could.
Ryan watched his brother on screen.
Angry.
Alive.
Ashamed.
Daniel said:
“I screwed up my marriage. That’s mine. But if Laura’s baby is mine, she gets what belongs to her.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
Daniel had intended to acknowledge Emma.
Then the final file.
A trust amendment.
Signed by Daniel.
Witnessed by Laura.
If DNA confirmed paternity, Emma would inherit Daniel’s interest directly.
No discretionary control by Vanessa.
No control by Margaret.
Ryan whispered:
“She owns the shares.”
His attorney nodded.
“If authenticated and legally valid.”
Ryan immediately said:
“Then we authenticate it.”
No fight.
No attempt to keep what he had inherited.
Claire looked at him.
“You’d give up forty percent of the company?”
“It was never mine.”
That answer changed something between them.
Then investigators found another recording.
Margaret’s voice.
Daniel:
“You’ve been taking money.”
Margaret:
“I’ve been protecting this family.”
Daniel:
“From what?”
Margaret:
“From men like you who create heirs everywhere and expect everyone else to clean it up.”
Ryan stared.
Bloodline resentment.
Control.
Money.
All tangled together.
Then Margaret said one more thing.
“If that baby is yours, she never enters this family.”
Daniel laughed.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
The recording ended.
Claire whispered:
“She decided anyway.”
Yes.
For fifteen months.
Then Detective Reed entered.
“We found Margaret.”
Ryan stood.
“Where?”
“At St. Matthew’s.”
“What is she doing there?”
May you like
“Destroying records.”
👉 Daniel’s own recording proved Margaret swore Emma would never enter the Carter family—and now she had returned to the hospital to erase whatever evidence remained.
