Chapter 3 - The Signature Ryan Never Remembered

Ryan demanded the document.

Claire said it was hidden.

“Where?”

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

“In my office.”

Police had already taken statements.

Claire knew she could no longer control the story.

The next morning, her attorney produced copies.

Ryan stared at his signature.

It looked genuine.

The document authorized destruction of certain neonatal genetic samples.

Dated sixteen months earlier.

One month before Ethan was born.

Ryan frowned.

“I never signed this.”

His attorney agreed the signature required examination.

Claire looked exhausted.

“You signed a medical consent packet when I was pregnant.”

Ryan remembered.

Dozens of forms.

Hospital registration.

Emergency release.

Genetic testing.

He barely read them.

Someone could have copied his signature.

But why?

Claire opened another file.

A hospital administrator:

Margaret Shaw.

Ryan knew her.

She was Claire’s aunt.

Ryan slowly looked up.

“Your aunt?”

Claire nodded.

Margaret had been director of patient administration at St. Matthew’s.

She was also the person who helped Claire get a private maternity room.

The person who processed Ethan’s newborn paperwork.

And the woman Claire called first whenever something went wrong.

Ryan felt sick.

“How does Emma connect to Margaret?”

Claire said:

“Emma’s mother was a patient there.”

“Name.”

“Laura Bennett.”

Ryan’s face changed.

He knew Laura.

Not well.

But enough.

She had been his executive assistant two years earlier.

She resigned suddenly.

Claire noticed.

“You remember her.”

“Yes.”

“Did you sleep with her?”

Ryan stood.

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“Never?”

“Never.”

“Then why did she name you?”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Claire slid over another document.

An unfiled paternity declaration.

Father:

Ryan Carter.

His mouth went dry.

“That’s false.”

“I believed that too.”

“Believed?”

Claire took out her phone.

She played an old voicemail.

Laura’s voice:

Ryan doesn’t know. He never knew.

Ryan stared.

Claire continued.

Laura said Emma’s biological father was someone else.

But Margaret insisted Ryan’s name appear temporarily on paperwork.

Why?

Claire didn’t know.

Then Laura died in a house fire when Emma was six weeks old.

Emma was placed with Laura’s sister.

Three months later, that family was told Emma had died during a hospital emergency.

But she hadn’t.

Ryan stared at Claire.

“Where has she been for the last year?”

Claire whispered:

“With Margaret.”

Silence.

Ryan felt ice move through him.

“Your aunt had her?”

“Yes.”

“And three days ago?”

“Emma appeared at our back door.”

Ryan stared.

“Alone?”

Claire nodded.

“She had a note pinned inside her pajamas.”

“What note?”

Claire reached into her purse.

Ryan read it.

One sentence.
