Chapter 4 - The DNA Result Nobody Expected

Ryan ordered the test anyway.
His sample.
Emma’s.
Verified chain of custody.
Claire stopped fighting him.
“I’m done hiding things.”
“Good.”
The result arrived two days later.
Ryan opened it with Claire beside him.
Probability of paternity:
0%.
Ryan exhaled.
Claire did too.
Then the laboratory called.
“There’s an additional issue.”
Ryan frowned.
“What?”
Emma shared close-family markers with him.
Not father-daughter.
But enough to indicate likely biological relation.
Ryan stared.
“What kind?”
The lab requested comparison samples.
Ryan gave permission to test against stored genetic material from his late father, Thomas Carter.
Thomas had died three years earlier.
The result stunned everyone.
Emma was almost certainly Thomas Carter’s biological granddaughter.
Ryan sat down.
“That means…”
Claire finished:
“My aunt wasn’t protecting Emma from you.”
Ryan looked at her.
“She was protecting whoever her father is.”
Thomas had two sons.
Ryan.
And Daniel Carter.
Ryan’s older brother.
Daniel had died in a boating accident four years earlier.
Claire whispered:
“Daniel?”
Ryan stared at Emma.
Daniel had been forty when he died.
Married.
No known children.
His widow, Vanessa, had moved to Seattle afterward.
Ryan remembered Laura Bennett now.
She had worked for Ryan because Daniel recommended her.
Ryan opened old emails.
Then found one from Daniel.
Subject:
LAURA.
Message:
Give her a job. She needs a clean start.
Ryan’s stomach tightened.
Claire asked:
“Did you ever ask why?”
“No.”
A deeper records search showed Laura had previously worked at Daniel’s private investment company.
Then abruptly left.
Around the time Daniel died.
Ryan called Vanessa.
She refused to discuss Laura.
Then hung up.
That reaction told him enough to keep digging.
Claire asked:
“So Emma is Daniel’s daughter?”
“Maybe.”
But why would Margaret falsify Ryan’s name?
And why hide Emma?
Then Claire’s attorney discovered a Carter family trust.
Ryan had heard of it.
He had never read the terms.
It contained a provision created by Thomas Carter.
If Daniel died with a biological child, that child would inherit Daniel’s forty-percent interest in Carter Holdings.
If Daniel died without descendants, the shares passed to Ryan.
Ryan slowly lowered the document.
“I inherited Daniel’s shares.”
Claire whispered:
“Because everyone thought he had no child.”
Ryan understood.
If Emma was Daniel’s daughter, Ryan was currently holding an inheritance that legally belonged to her branch.
Claire looked frightened.
“But that doesn’t explain Margaret.”
Ryan agreed.
Then the trust attorney found the administrator who certified Daniel died without children.
Margaret Shaw.
May you like
Claire’s aunt.
👉 The DNA test cleared Ryan as Emma’s father—but revealed she may be Daniel’s secret daughter and the rightful heir to the fortune Ryan unknowingly inherited.
