Chapter 2 - The Girl Had Ryan’s Eyes

Ryan called emergency services.
Claire begged him not to.
He ignored her.
The little girl was taken for evaluation.
She was dehydrated and underfed, but stable.
Ryan stayed beside her.
So did Ethan.
Claire sat across the room.
Silent.
Ryan looked at the toddler.
Brown hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
A dimple that appeared when she stopped crying.
His dimple.
He hated himself for noticing.
The doctor asked:
“Do you know her name?”
Claire answered quietly.
“Emma.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You know her name.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Claire stared at the floor.
“I can’t explain this here.”
Ryan laughed once.
“You hid a fifteen-month-old child in our house.”
“She wasn’t supposed to be there that long.”
“That is not a defense.”
Claire flinched.
Ryan lowered his voice.
Ethan was nearby.
“Tell me who Emma is.”
Claire whispered:
“She was born at St. Matthew’s.”
Ryan froze.
That was the hospital where Ethan had been born.
Same month?
No.
Ethan was seventeen months old.
Emma was approximately fifteen months.
Two months apart.
Impossible for Claire to be both mothers.
Then Emma reached toward Ryan.
“Daddy.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Ryan stared.
“Did you teach her that?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer sounded truthful.
Ryan requested a DNA test.
Claire immediately stood.
“No.”
Ryan slowly turned.
Her panic was back.
“Why?”
“Because once you do that, you can’t undo what comes next.”
“Good.”
Claire shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then help me understand.”
She whispered:
“Emma has legal parents.”
Ryan stared.
“Where are they?”
Claire’s silence terrified him.
“Claire.”
“They think she’s dead.”
Ryan went completely still.
The room seemed to disappear around him.
“What?”
Claire wiped her face.
“Fifteen months ago, there was a newborn identification error at St. Matthew’s.”
Ryan said nothing.
Claire continued.
“Two baby girls were involved.”
“Emma and who?”
Claire looked toward Ethan.
Then back at Ryan.
“No. Ethan wasn’t involved.”
Ryan exhaled.
But Claire wasn’t finished.
“One of the babies was recorded as deceased.”
“And?”
“She wasn’t.”
Ryan looked at Emma.
His stomach twisted.
“Who was?”
Claire whispered:
“That’s the problem.”
The hospital had apparently discovered the mistake months later.
But someone had buried it.
Someone with access to birth records.
And Claire had discovered those records by accident.
Ryan asked:
“Why didn’t you call police?”
Claire finally looked at him.
May you like
“Because the person who buried the mistake had your signature.”
👉 Emma’s birth records led straight back to the hospital where Ethan was born—and Claire claimed Ryan’s own signature was part of the cover-up.
