Chapter 2 - The Marriage Was the Trap

Three months earlier, Ethan had seemed perfect.

Patient.

Attentive.

Protective without being controlling.

He remembered how Emma took her coffee. He called her during long workdays. He listened when she spoke about losing her mother and growing up with a father who believed love should never be mixed with money.

That was why Emma had never told Ethan the full truth about her family.

He knew her father owned a small construction company in Wisconsin.

He did not know Daniel Carter controlled one of the largest private real-estate investment firms in the Midwest.

Emma had spent years building her own career outside that empire.

She wanted to know whether someone could love her before learning what her last name was worth.

Ethan passed every test.

Or so she believed.

Six weeks before the wedding, he suggested buying a home together.

Not just any home.

A restored lakefront mansion in Chicago worth nearly four million dollars.

“I want us to start our life somewhere permanent,” he had told her.

Emma hesitated.

The property had belonged to her late mother’s family.

Through a trust, Emma already controlled it.

Ethan did not know that.

She told him only that she could arrange the purchase.

His excitement had looked like love.

Now, beneath the bridal bed, Emma understood it had been hunger.

Ethan tapped the folded document against his palm.

“Once the transfer is complete, Vanessa’s attorney moves the property into the holding company.”

Rachel frowned.

“What about Emma?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Broken women sign anything.”

Emma’s eyes burned.

Vanessa was not Ethan’s mother, as Emma had once assumed.

She was his former employer.

And apparently, his partner.

Then Rachel asked the question that turned Emma’s blood cold.

“And after she signs?”

Ethan looked toward the dark windows.

“Then I make sure she has nowhere left to go.”

👉 Emma had recorded their plan—but the document on the bed contained a detail that could destroy her before she ever used it.
