Chapter 1 - Beneath the Bridal Bed

“The house is almost ours.”
Vanessa Hale’s voice floated across the luxury bridal suite like a knife wrapped in silk.
Emma Carter lay flat beneath the king-size bed, one hand clamped over her mouth.
Above her, the mattress shifted.
Champagne rippled inside Vanessa’s glass. Her silver sequined gown shimmered beneath the warm hotel lamps as she stood beside Emma’s new husband.
Ethan.
The man Emma had married less than two hours earlier.
He was still wearing his black tuxedo.
Still wearing the boutonniere she had pinned to his lapel with trembling fingers.
And beside him stood Rachel Moore, visibly pregnant in a fitted red gown, one protective hand resting on her stomach.
Emma’s stomach twisted.
Rachel had been introduced to everyone as Ethan’s business consultant.
Now she stood close enough to touch his arm.
Ethan pulled a folded document from inside his jacket.
“She signs tomorrow,” he said coldly. “Then she breaks.”
Emma stared at the dark screen of the phone in her hand.
Recording.
Every word.
Every breath.
Every betrayal.
A silver hairpin slipped from Emma’s hair and struck the wooden bed frame.
Click.
Silence filled the suite.
Rachel’s eyes dropped toward the carpet.
“What was that?”
Emma stopped breathing.
Ethan took one slow step toward the bed.
His polished shoe stopped inches from her face.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“The bride’s already gone.”
Emma looked at her wedding ring.
For the first time that night, she understood something terrifying.

They had never expected her to survive the marriage with anything left.
👉 But Ethan was about to discover that Emma had hidden far more than a phone beneath that bed.
