Chapter 7 - The Name That Frightened Vanessa

Emma looked at Vanessa.
“Do you remember Daniel Carter?”
Vanessa’s champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.
Only slightly.
But Emma saw it.
Ethan looked between them.
“Who?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Emma stepped closer.
“My father.”
Ethan gave a short laugh.
“The contractor?”
Emma almost pitied him.
“No. Daniel Carter, chairman of Carter Ridge Capital.”
Rachel’s mouth fell open.
Ethan’s face emptied.
Vanessa whispered, “That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“His daughter’s name is—”
“Emma Claire Carter,” Emma finished. “He kept me out of the press after my mother died.”
The silence that followed felt enormous.
Ethan searched her face as if wealth might suddenly become visible in her skin.
“You lied to me.”
Emma’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady.
“I protected myself.”
“From me?”
“Apparently not well enough.”
Vanessa set down the glass.
Her control was slipping.
“If Daniel Carter is involved, we can negotiate.”
Emma laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You forged my signature, planned to steal trust property, and discussed destroying my mental stability.”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“Words spoken privately prove very little.”
A knock sounded at the hotel door.
Three slow knocks.
Emma did not move.
Ethan did.
He looked at the door, then at her.
“Who is that?”
Emma’s father’s voice came from the hallway.
“Open the door, Ethan.”
Rachel began to cry.
Vanessa grabbed the forged agreement.
Emma caught her wrist.
For the first time all night, Vanessa looked afraid.
The knocking came again.
“Emma,” Daniel called. “I’m coming in.”
Ethan moved toward the door, perhaps to block it.
Emma stepped in front of him.
“You wanted my signature.”
She held out her left hand.
Her wedding ring glittered beneath the lamp.
“Here’s the only thing I’m giving you.”
She pulled off the ring.
Then the door opened behind him.
Daniel Carter entered with two hotel security officers and Natalie Price.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
She knew Natalie.

And Natalie was holding a thick black binder.
👉 The binder contained the history Ethan believed had been buried forever.
