Chapter 8 - The Black Binder

Natalie placed the binder on the bed.

Vanessa stared at it as though it were a weapon.

In a way, it was.

Inside were seven years of records.

Payments.

Shell companies.

Forged agreements.

Private investigator reports.

Emails between Vanessa and Ethan.

Medical records showing Rachel’s pregnancy had begun months before Ethan proposed to Emma.

And two previous victims.

Their names were Claire Benton and Marisol Hayes.

Both women had agreed to cooperate.

Ethan looked at Natalie.

“You stole confidential files.”

Natalie met his stare.

“I preserved evidence.”

Vanessa snapped, “You signed a nondisclosure agreement.”

Natalie opened the binder.

“Fraud is not protected by an NDA.”

Daniel moved to Emma’s side.

He did not touch her at first.

He waited.

Emma leaned into him.

Only then did he place an arm around her shoulders.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“No,” he said. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

Ethan watched them.

His panic became anger.

“You set me up.”

Daniel turned to him.

“You selected my daughter, studied her, lied to her, impregnated another woman, and forged legal documents.”

His voice remained calm.

“You set yourself up.”

Rachel began shaking.

“I was told the signatures were only drafts.”

Vanessa looked at her with disgust.

“Don’t become stupid now.”

Rachel flinched.

Emma noticed.

For the first time, Rachel did not look smug.

She looked trapped.

Ethan pointed at Natalie.

“She’s lying.”

Natalie removed a small audio recorder.

Then she pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Emma Carter is emotionally isolated. After the transfer, Ethan will create evidence of instability.”

Another recording followed.

Ethan’s voice.

“Once she’s hospitalized, the trust challenge becomes easier.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Hospitalized.

That had been their plan.

Not merely divorce.

Not merely theft.

They intended to make her appear mentally unfit.

Rachel stared at Ethan.

“You never told me that.”

Ethan turned on her.

“You knew enough.”

“No,” Rachel whispered. “I knew about the house. I didn’t know you planned to lock her away.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Everyone in this room knew exactly what they were doing.”

Emma looked at Rachel’s trembling hands.

Then she saw something Rachel was trying to hide.
