Chapter 3 - The Paper on the Bed

Ethan crouched beside the bed.

Emma pressed herself deeper into the narrow darkness.

His fingers moved beneath the frame.

For one awful second, she thought he had seen her.

Then his hand closed around the fallen hairpin.

He lifted it.

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“That’s hers,” Rachel whispered.

Ethan stared at the silver pin.

Emma could hear his breathing change.

He leaned lower.

Before his eyes reached the floor, the hotel door opened.

“Champagne service.”

A young employee pushed in a silver cart.

Ethan stood immediately.

Vanessa recovered first.

“Leave it near the window.”

The interruption lasted less than thirty seconds, but it gave Emma what she needed.

She slid silently from the opposite side of the bed and moved behind the heavy curtains.

Her knees shook.

Her white gown dragged across the carpet.

She kept the phone pressed against her chest.

Recording.

Ethan dismissed the employee and locked the door.

“We need to find her,” Rachel said.

Vanessa glanced toward the bathroom.

“She probably ran downstairs crying.”

Ethan unfolded the document.

Emma could not read every line from behind the curtain.

But she saw the heading.

POSTNUPTIAL PROPERTY AGREEMENT.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

Emma’s breath caught.

She had never signed it.

Someone had forged her name.

Worse, the document claimed she had voluntarily transferred all interest in the lakefront property to a company called North Meridian Holdings.

Emma recognized that name.

It had appeared once in Ethan’s financial disclosures.

A dormant consulting company with no listed assets.

Now she knew why it existed.

Rachel touched her belly.

“You promised this would be done before the baby comes.”

Ethan snapped, “It will be.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Only if Emma believes the signature is hers.”

From behind the curtain, Emma photographed every page.

Then her phone vibrated.

One incoming message.

From her father.

Are you safe?

Emma stared at the words.

She had never told him she suspected anything.
