Chapter 5 - The Woman on the Voicemail

Emma pressed the phone to her ear.

The woman spoke quickly.

“My name is Natalie Price. I worked for Vanessa Hale for eleven years. Ethan did too.”

Emma’s hand went cold.

Natalie continued.

“They have done this before. Wealthy woman. Fast romance. Marriage. Property transfer. Emotional collapse. They call it soft acquisition.”

Emma stared at herself in the mirror.

Her bridal makeup was perfect.

Her life was not.

The voicemail explained that Ethan had targeted two women before Emma.

One had lost a vacation property.

The other had been manipulated into signing over shares in her family business.

Neither woman had been able to prove conspiracy.

Vanessa always stayed one step removed.

Ethan played the loving partner.

North Meridian moved the assets.

Rachel handled document preparation and false financial records.

Emma’s heart pounded.

Rachel was not merely Ethan’s mistress.

She was part of the machine.

Natalie’s voice lowered.

“I sent you the photograph because I saw your name on a draft agreement. Your signature was already attached.”

A knock hit the dressing-room door.

“Emma?” Ethan called.

His voice had changed.

Warm.

Concerned.

The same voice that had once made her feel safe.

“Baby, are you in there?”

Emma remained silent.

He tried the handle.

The door opened two inches.

Emma shoved a chair beneath it.

Ethan stopped pretending.

“Open the door.”

Vanessa spoke behind him.

“Don’t frighten her.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“She already knows.”

Emma opened the second phone’s secure folder.

Natalie had attached bank statements, emails, and a photograph of Vanessa signing payments to a handwriting specialist.

It was evidence.

But not enough.

A forged document could be challenged.

A private recording could be disputed.

Emma needed them to say what they intended to do after she refused.

She looked at the connecting bathroom door.

There was another exit into the main suite.

Emma slipped through it quietly.

She left the second phone recording inside the dressing room.

Then she stepped into the bedroom behind them.

Ethan was still facing the blocked door.

Emma stood beside the bed, holding the forged agreement.

“You were looking for me?”

All three turned.

No one spoke.

Emma smiled faintly.

“Let’s talk about my house.”

👉 Emma had stopped hiding—but Ethan still believed fear would make her obey.
