Chapter 4 - The Warning She Ignored

Two days before the wedding, Emma had received an envelope at her office.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Ethan and Rachel leaving a medical clinic together.

Rachel’s pregnancy had been less visible then, but unmistakable.

On the back, someone had written:

Ask him who North Meridian belongs to.

Emma confronted Ethan that night.

He did not panic.

He laughed.

He told her Rachel had suffered a dizzy spell during a meeting and he had driven her to urgent care.

Then he kissed Emma’s forehead and asked why she trusted anonymous strangers more than the man she was about to marry.

She had hated herself for doubting him.

Now she hated how expertly he had used her love against her.

Behind the curtain, Emma typed one reply to her father.

Not safe. Don’t call. Track my phone.

Ethan suddenly turned.

“Did you hear that?”

Emma froze.

The message had sent with a faint tone.

Vanessa moved toward the curtains.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the phone.

There was nowhere to run.

Then Rachel grabbed the forged agreement.

“You said she’d be downstairs,” she hissed. “What if she heard us?”

Vanessa turned on her.

“If you hadn’t insisted on coming here dressed like a mistress in a red gown, we wouldn’t have a problem.”

Rachel’s face changed.

“You told me I deserved to see him choose me.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“Both of you shut up.”

Emma realized something important.

They were not united.

Vanessa wanted the property.

Rachel wanted Ethan.

Ethan wanted both women useful and afraid.

That fracture was her only advantage.

Vanessa reached for the curtains.

Emma lifted the champagne-service tray and quietly pushed it toward the bathroom.

The wheels squeaked.

All three turned.

Emma slipped out from behind the curtain and entered the connecting dressing room.

She closed the door without letting it latch.

On the vanity sat her overnight bag.

Inside was the second phone her father had insisted she carry.

A device Ethan did not know existed.

Emma switched it on.

Three missed calls.

One voicemail.

The caller was the woman who had sent the photograph.

👉 When Emma heard the woman’s voice, she realized Ethan’s betrayal had begun years before he ever met her.
