Chapter 3 - What Emma Left Behind

Noah fell asleep in Grant’s arms after the paramedics finished examining him.

Tessa sat across the room.

Vivienne had been removed from the house.

Grant waited until the door closed.

Then he looked at Tessa.

“Tell me everything.”

Tessa hesitated.

“I promised Emma.”

Grant went still.

“You knew Emma?”

Tessa nodded.

Not casually.

Not barely.

“She was my sister.”

Grant stared at her.

“What?”

Tessa’s eyes filled.

“Half-sister.”

Grant slowly sat down.

“You never told me.”

“She made me promise.”

“Why?”

Tessa looked toward Noah.

“Because she didn’t trust anyone around you.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“Anyone?”

“Especially Vivienne.”

Grant stood again.

“Why would Emma know Vivienne?”

Tessa swallowed.

“They knew each other before you met either of them.”

Grant’s face changed.

“How?”

“College.”

Grant had never heard this.

Tessa continued.

“They were friends.”

“Were?”

“Until Emma started dating you.”

Grant rubbed his forehead.

Vivienne had always acted as though she barely knew Emma.

“She lied.”

“Yes.”

“About knowing Noah’s mother.”

“Yes.”

Grant looked down at his sleeping son.

“What else?”

Tessa reached into her bag.

She removed a small key.

“Emma gave me this three weeks before she died.”

Grant stared at it.

“What does it open?”

“A safe-deposit box.”

His eyes lifted.

“She told me not to open it unless Vivienne ever tried to hurt Noah.”

Grant felt cold.

“She expected this?”

“She expected something.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Tessa’s voice broke.

“She tried.”

Grant looked at her.

“What?”

“Emma believed someone was reading her messages.”

Grant’s stomach tightened.

“She became paranoid near the end.”

Tessa shook her head.

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“That’s what Vivienne told you.”

Grant stopped.

Tessa continued.

“Emma wasn’t imagining it.”

Grant remembered the final months.

Emma saying someone had been in the house.

Emma claiming papers were moved.

Emma asking Grant to change security codes.

Vivienne had dismissed it all.

Stress.

Postpartum anxiety.

Exhaustion.

Grant had believed her.

His chest tightened.

“Tessa…”

She looked at him.

“Emma left evidence.”

Grant stared at the key.

“Of what?”

Tessa answered quietly.

“I don’t know.”

Then added:

👉 Emma had been dead for eleven months, but the key in Tessa’s hand was about to reveal why Vivienne had been watching Noah since the day he came home from the hospital.
