Chapter 4 - The Safe-Deposit Box

Grant and Tessa opened the box the next morning.

Inside sat a thick envelope.

A flash drive.

A sealed letter addressed to Grant.

And Noah’s original birth records.

Grant opened the letter first.

Emma’s handwriting hit him like a ghost.

Grant,

If you’re reading this, something happened that made Tessa believe Noah is in danger.

Grant stopped.

Tessa looked away.

He continued.

Emma explained that months before Noah was born, she discovered Vivienne had been quietly moving money through one of Grant’s family investment companies.

Not millions.

Not at first.

Small amounts.

Hidden payments.

Consulting fees.

Shell vendors.

Grant frowned.

Vivienne had worked with Mercer Holdings as an outside strategist.

Emma had access to certain financial records because she was helping Grant restructure the family trust.

Grant kept reading.

Emma confronted Vivienne privately.

Vivienne denied everything.

Then Emma discovered something worse.

Several payments led back to a private investigator.

Grant looked at Tessa.

“A private investigator?”

Tessa nodded toward the flash drive.

Grant plugged it into his laptop.

Folders appeared.

BANK RECORDS.

MESSAGES.

AUDIO.

PHOTOS.

Grant’s stomach tightened.

He opened the photos first.

Vivienne meeting with a man outside Emma’s OB-GYN office.

Another image showed the same man outside Grant’s mansion.

Another outside the hospital after Noah was born.

Grant whispered:

“She was watching Emma.”

Tessa’s eyes filled.

“Emma knew.”

Grant opened the messages.

Vivienne had asked the investigator questions.

Where Emma went.

Who she spoke to.

Whether she had hired an attorney.

Whether she had transferred documents.

Then one line stopped him.

Find out whether the baby changes the trust distribution.

Grant leaned back.

Noah.

This wasn’t only jealousy.

It was money.

Grant’s father had created a trust decades earlier.

If Grant had no biological child, portions of certain family assets would eventually pass through another branch of the Mercer family.

Vivienne had been close to that branch.

Grant stared at the screen.

“How much?”

Tessa whispered:

“What?”

“How much would Noah change?”

Grant opened old trust records.

His face went pale.

Noah’s birth had redirected control over almost thirty million dollars in future assets.

Grant looked at Tessa.

“Vivienne knew.”

Tessa nodded.

“Emma believed she did.”

Grant opened the final audio file.

Emma’s voice filled the room.

“Vivienne, stay away from my son.”

Then Vivienne’s voice answered:

“You have no idea what you just took from me.”

May you like

Grant stopped breathing.

👉 Grant finally knew Noah had changed the Mercer inheritance—but the next recording proved Vivienne’s hatred of Emma had become far more personal than money.
