Chapter 9 - The Nurse Who Remembered

Nurse Patricia Lane remembered Emma clearly.
“She was scared.”
Grant listened through an investigator’s summary.
“Scared of dying?”
The investigator shook his head.
“Scared of Vivienne.”
Grant’s chest tightened.
Patricia recalled Emma gripping her wrist.
“She said, ‘Don’t let that woman back in.’”
“What woman?”
“Vivienne Cross.”
Grant closed his eyes.
Patricia documented the request.
But the note was entered into a nursing comment section, not the physician summary.
Grant had never seen it.
Hours later, Vivienne appeared anyway.
“She told staff she was family.”
Grant stared.
“She wasn’t.”
“No.”
“Why was she allowed in?”
“She knew enough personal details to sound credible.”
Grant remembered.
Vivienne knew everyone.
Names.
Schedules.
Connections.
She knew how institutions responded to confidence.
Patricia said Emma became visibly distressed when Vivienne entered.
Then Hale appeared.
Then medication was authorized.
Then Emma’s medical emergency worsened.
Investigators were careful.
No one claimed murder.
Not yet.
But the pattern was serious enough for deeper review.
Grant’s attorney explained:
“Even if Hale’s medication did not cause Emma’s death, Vivienne’s actions may still support charges related to harassment, coercion, conspiracy around unauthorized access, financial misconduct, and what happened with Noah.”
Grant looked at Tessa.
She seemed relieved by the precision.
Not because she wanted Vivienne spared.
Because she wanted truth stronger than rage.
Later, Grant visited Emma’s grave.
He had not brought Tessa.
He needed to go alone.
He stood there for nearly an hour.
“I’m sorry I made you prove you were afraid.”
Wind moved through the trees.
Grant looked down.
“I’m sorry I trusted the person making you afraid.”
He had spent months after Emma’s death blaming himself for not saving her medically.
Now his guilt was different.
He hadn’t listened.
When he returned home, Tessa was feeding Noah.
Grant sat across from her.
“I owe you an apology too.”
Tessa looked surprised.
“For what?”
“I hired you because you seemed unusually protective of Noah.”
She almost smiled.
“Wonder why.”
“I thought you were overprotective.”
“That part I knew.”
Grant laughed softly.
Then became serious.
“You saved him.”
Tessa looked at Noah.
“I did what Emma asked me to do.”
Grant shook his head.
“No.”
“You did more.”
Before Tessa could answer, the doorbell rang.
Grant checked the camera.
Vivienne stood outside.
Alone.
Her face looked calm.
Too calm.
Grant didn’t open the door.
He spoke through the intercom.
“Leave.”
Vivienne stared at the camera.
“I have something Emma never told you.”
Grant froze.
“What?”
Vivienne smiled faintly.
“Ask Tessa why she really took the caregiver job.”
Grant slowly turned toward Tessa.
May you like
Her face went pale.
👉 Vivienne had finally lost control of the evidence, so she attacked the one relationship Grant still trusted—and Tessa’s reaction told him there really was one last secret.
