Chapter 10 - Tessa’s Secret

Grant waited until Vivienne left.
Then he turned to Tessa.
“What didn’t you tell me?”
Tessa looked toward Noah.
“Not in front of him.”
They moved into the study.
Tessa closed the door.
Grant’s voice remained controlled.
“Why did you take this job?”
“I told you.”
“Emma asked you to protect Noah.”
“Yes.”
“That isn’t the whole answer.”
Tessa looked down.
“No.”
Grant waited.
“My name wasn’t originally Monroe.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“It was Bennett.”
Grant stared.
“Tessa Bennett.”
“Yes.”
“Emma’s last name before marriage.”
Tessa nodded.
Grant slowly understood.
“You weren’t just her half-sister.”
“I was legally adopted by another family when I was eight.”
Grant sat down.
“Why didn’t Emma tell me?”
“Because our family history was ugly.”
Tessa explained.
Their mother struggled financially.
Tessa was placed with relatives.
Eventually adopted.
Emma found her again as an adult.
They rebuilt their relationship quietly.
Vivienne knew.
Grant rubbed his forehead.
“So Vivienne knew who you were before I hired you.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew she knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Emma believed if Vivienne knew you trusted me because I was family, she’d find a way to push me out.”
Grant stared at her.
“You let me think you were a stranger.”
“Yes.”
“That was dishonest.”
Tessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Grant felt anger rise.
Then stop.
Tessa didn’t defend herself.
She continued.
“I’m sorry.”
Grant said nothing.
“I was terrified.”
“Of Vivienne?”
“Of losing access to Noah.”
Grant looked toward the ceiling.
Another secret.
Another person deciding he couldn’t handle the truth.
He hated it.
Tessa whispered:
“I know this feels like everyone lied to you.”
“It does.”
“I did.”
Grant looked at her.
“But I didn’t lie to control you.”
“No.”
“I lied because I promised Emma I would stay close enough to protect her son.”
Grant’s anger softened.
Not vanished.
Softened.
Tessa continued.
“If you want me gone after this, I understand.”
Grant stared at her.
Then laughed bitterly.
“Vivienne wants exactly that.”
Tessa said nothing.
Grant walked toward the window.
“She threw your secret at me because she thinks every hidden truth is the same.”
He turned.
“It isn’t.”
Tessa’s eyes filled.
Grant added:
“But no more secrets.”
“None.”
“Ever.”
“Ever.”
Then his phone rang.
His attorney.
The forensic medical review was complete.
Grant answered.
And listened.
His expression changed.
Tessa stood.
“What?”
Grant lowered the phone.
“Hale’s medication probably did not cause Emma’s death.”
Tessa exhaled.
Then Grant continued.
“But it likely delayed recognition of how serious her condition was.”
Tessa’s face fell.
“And Vivienne’s interference?”
Grant swallowed.
“Documented.”
