Chapter 10 - What Henry Recorded

Henry Carter had one more surprise.
Samuel found it in the firm archive.
A recording made nine days before Henry died.
Daniel sat alone when Samuel played it.
Henry’s voice filled the room.
Weak.
But clear.
“Margaret, sit down.”
“I don’t have time for another lecture.”
“You moved foundation money.”
“You don’t know what you’re looking at.”
“I know enough.”
A long silence.
Then Margaret:
“Daniel will give everything away.”
“He’s responsible.”
“He married that nurse.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire.
Henry answered:
“He married a woman he loves.”
“She trapped him.”
“Stop.”
“She got pregnant immediately.”
“And you think that makes Noah less my grandson?”
Margaret said nothing.
Henry continued.
“I changed the trust.”
“What?”
“Daniel’s first biological child will control my shares.”
“You cannot do that.”
“I did.”
Margaret’s voice sharpened.
“What if the baby isn’t his?”
Henry paused.
Then:
“Is that what you’re planning?”
Silence.
Daniel felt cold.
Henry had seen it coming.
The recording continued.
“If you attack that child to get at the company, Margaret, you’ll lose more than money.”
“You’re threatening me?”
“No.”
Henry sounded exhausted.
“I’m warning you.”
The audio ended.
Daniel sat for a long time.
Samuel finally asked:
“Do you want a copy?”
“Yes.”
Daniel took it home.
That night he sat beside Noah’s crib.
“You had people protecting you before you even knew their names.”
Noah slept.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Grandpa Henry was one.”
Then his face tightened.
“Your mom was another.”
Daniel finally understood something that had haunted him since Claire died.
She had not kept Margaret’s threats secret because she distrusted Daniel.
She kept them secret because she knew Daniel was losing his father.
She thought she could shield him.
Just a little longer.
Daniel whispered toward the dark room:
“I’m sorry, Claire.”
The next morning prosecutors expanded the case against Margaret.
Financial fraud.
Forgery-related charges.
Evidence tampering.
And the child-endangerment case stemming from Noah’s fall.
Her attorney requested negotiations.
Margaret refused.
“She wants a trial,” Samuel said.
Daniel nodded.
“Good.”
Samuel studied him.
“You sure?”
Daniel looked toward Noah.
May you like
“Yes.”
“I want everyone to hear her own words.”
