Chapter 65 - The Twenty-Seven Minutes
Henry's cassette was dated March 16, 1992.
One day after Daniel signed the revised Project Lantern scope.
Thomas Hale had recorded the meeting.
Without telling anyone.
That created legal issues.
Noah did not care yet.
The voices:
Thomas Hale.
Henry Carter.
Elias Trent.
Daniel.
Daniel froze when he heard himself at thirty-one.
Younger.
Faster.
Confident.
Almost impatient.
Thomas spoke first.
“The east sampling points were removed.”
Young Daniel:
“No. The revised plan concentrates them.”
Thomas:
“I have the sheet.”
Paper moved.
Silence.
Then Daniel:
“This isn't what Trent showed me.”
Noah looked at his father.
Daniel's eyes filled.
The tape continued.
Elias Trent:
“The changes are technical.”
Thomas:
“They remove every residential boundary location.”
Trent:
“There are no residences there.”
Thomas:
“There will be.”
Henry's voice entered.
Strong.
Impatient.
“Enough.”
A pause.
“Daniel, did you approve this?”
“Yes.”
“Did you understand those points were removed?”
“No.”
“Then why did you sign?”
Silence.
Daniel heard his younger self give the answer he would regret for the rest of his life.
“Elias said environmental had agreed.”
Thomas:
“I did not agree.”
Henry:
“Then nothing moves.”
Noah stopped breathing.
Henry had known by March 16.
Three days later came the hold memo.
Why?
The tape continued.
Henry:
“Restore all six points.”
Trent:
“That will delay the transaction review.”
Henry:
“Then delay it.”
Noah looked at Daniel.
Daniel whispered:
“He ordered them back.”
Yes.
Then the cassette clicked.
Static.
Twenty-seven minutes missing.
Recording resumed.
Voices louder.
Thomas:
“I won't sign that.”
Trent:
“Then we'll note your dissent.”
Henry:
“Thomas, nobody is asking you to lie.”
Thomas:
“You're asking me to call incomplete data inconclusive.”
Henry:
“It is inconclusive.”
Thomas:
“Because you stopped the work.”
Henry:
“I stopped residential expansion until we know what we're dealing with.”
Thomas:
“You learn what you're dealing with by testing.”
Silence.
Then Henry:
“Give me thirty days.”
Tape ended.
Noah stared.
Thirty days.
Did testing resume?
Records said no.
What happened during the missing twenty-seven minutes?
Thomas's notebook gave only one clue.
3/16 - HJC angry at E.T. Says no sale if east risk real. Then private discussion. After, HJC wants 30 days.
Private discussion.
Who spoke?
Elias Trent?
Daniel?
Someone on telephone?
They needed the missing section.
Nora examined the cassette.
Physical tape had been recorded over or damaged.
Forensic audio specialists recovered fragments.
One voice.
Elias Trent.
Another.
Henry.
A phrase:
“…Margaret says lenders will…”
Then static.
Noah closed his eyes.
Margaret.
He had promised himself not to turn every new problem into Margaret again.
But history did not care what he wanted.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“She handled lender relationships.”
Noah nodded.
“Could financing have collapsed?”
“Yes.”
“If contamination became public?”
“Possibly.”
Carter Global in 1992 had far more debt than today.
Henry may have faced a company-wide liquidity problem.
Noah looked at Daniel.
“Would he have hidden contamination to save the company?”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I don't know.”
