Chapter 11 - Margaret’s Last Offer

Margaret appeared at Daniel’s office parking garage.

She wasn’t supposed to.

A protective order prohibited contact regarding Noah.

But there she was.

Daniel stopped twenty feet away.

“You need to leave.”

Margaret looked tired.

Not weak.

Margaret was never weak.

“Ten minutes.”

“No.”

“You owe me that.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“I owe you?”

“I raised you.”

Daniel reached for his phone.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Do you want your mother in prison?”

Daniel stared at her.

“You still think this is something I’m doing to you.”

“Drop the financial complaint.”

“It isn’t mine to drop.”

“Tell prosecutors Victor lied.”

“He didn’t.”

“Tell them Claire manipulated Henry.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Stop.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“I was trying to protect what your father built.”

“By stealing from it?”

“I moved money.”

“By forging emails?”

“You were grieving.”

“Claire was still alive when you started.”

Margaret stopped.

Daniel continued.

“You didn’t think she would die.”

“No.”

“So what was the plan?”

Margaret looked away.

“Answer me.”

She finally whispered:

“I wanted her gone.”

Daniel felt something inside him go still.

“You offered her money.”

“She didn’t belong with you.”

“And Noah?”

“If she left, she would have taken him.”

Daniel understood.

Margaret never needed Noah hurt.

Not at first.

She needed Claire and Noah erased from Daniel’s life.

Then Claire died unexpectedly.

And Margaret saw an easier path.

Convince Daniel Noah wasn’t his.

Challenge the trust.

Keep the company.

Daniel shook his head.

“You had everything.”

Margaret looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice became bitter.

“I had a husband who stopped trusting me and a son who chose another woman over his family.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That sentence is why you lost us.”

Margaret blinked.

“You think love means choosing you over everyone else.”

She took a breath.

“Daniel—”

“Claire was my family.”

His voice broke slightly.

“Noah is my family.”

Then steadied.

“You were too.”

Past tense.

Margaret heard it.

Daniel called security.

She was escorted away.

The unauthorized contact was documented.

Before the elevator doors closed, Margaret said:

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

Daniel answered:

May you like

“No.”

“I regret believing you for as long as I did.”
