Chapter 5 - The Video
Daniel watched the recording once.
He never watched it again.
Detective Ramirez did.
So did the district attorney.
So did Samuel Pierce.
The timestamp showed Margaret carrying Noah toward the staircase.
He was already crying.
She placed him near the top step.
“You have taken everything from me.”
Noah whimpered.
Margaret bent down.
“You weren’t supposed to exist.”
Daniel’s entire body went rigid.
Then Margaret said:
“If your mother had listened to me, none of this would be happening.”
Noah reached toward her.
Margaret stood.
Her face hardened.
“A bastard like you doesn’t belong in this house.”
Then her foot moved.
Ramirez stopped the video before Noah reached the bottom.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stood at the end of the conference table with his hands braced against the wood.
Samuel finally said:
“Daniel.”
“I want her out of the house.”
“She can be restricted from contact.”
“I want her out of everything.”
Samuel understood exactly what he meant.
The board.
The trust.
The foundation.
Carter Global.
The detective preserved the recording.
Margaret was questioned that afternoon.
She changed her story.
First Noah slipped.
Then she said she had tried to stop him.
Then she claimed the camera angle was misleading.
Finally:
“I nudged him with my foot because he was crawling toward the edge.”
The video contradicted her.
She was arrested.
The Carter family reacted exactly as Margaret expected.
Privately.
Uncles called Daniel.
Cousins called Daniel.
Old family friends called.
“Don’t destroy her over one terrible moment.”
“She’s your mother.”
“She just lost control.”
“Handle it inside the family.”
Daniel listened to every call.
Then asked one question.
“If I had kicked your baby down a staircase, would you call it a family disagreement?”
Nobody answered.
But Margaret still had allies.
Her attorney filed an emergency petition.
Daniel was described as emotionally unstable.
Violent.
Recently bereaved.
Manipulated by Samuel Pierce.
The petition also challenged Noah’s DNA test.
Daniel read it twice.
Then stopped on one sentence.
The respondent has historically expressed uncertainty regarding the child's parentage.
Daniel hadn’t.
Margaret had.
But how could her lawyer claim otherwise?
Samuel investigated.
The answer arrived the next morning.
Someone had been sending emails from an old account in Daniel’s name.
