Chapter 3 - The Trust Nobody Mentioned

Daniel learned about the Carter Descendant Trust from a stranger.
Samuel Pierce called him at 8:12 on the morning Noah was kicked down the stairs.
“Mr. Carter, my name is Samuel Pierce.”
“What firm?”
“Pierce, Nolan & Webb.”
Daniel recognized it.
His father’s private estate firm.
His father, Henry Carter, had died two years earlier.
Daniel frowned.
“What’s this about?”
“Your son.”
Daniel went silent.
Samuel continued.
“I’ve sent three letters.”
“I never received them.”
Another pause.
“That concerns me.”
Daniel looked across his office.
“What letters?”
Samuel asked him to come immediately.
At 10:00 a.m., Daniel entered Samuel’s conference room.
At 10:07, his understanding of the Carter family changed forever.
Henry Carter had created a descendant trust five years earlier.
The trust held fifty-one percent of Carter Global Holdings.
Daniel received income from it.
But the controlling shares were reserved for Daniel’s first biological child.
Noah.
Daniel stared at Samuel.
“My father never told me.”
“He intended to.”
“Why didn’t he?”
“Because he was investigating something before his death.”
“What?”
Samuel hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Henry had discovered irregular transfers from Carter Foundation accounts.
Some had been authorized through Margaret.
Others passed through a private company she controlled.
Henry quietly changed the trust so Margaret could never gain voting control if Daniel had a child.
Then Noah was born.
Samuel produced a copy of the beneficiary registration.
NOAH JAMES CARTER.
Daniel stared at his son’s name.
Samuel continued.
“Six weeks ago, Mrs. Carter’s attorney contacted us.”
“About what?”
“Removing Noah as beneficiary.”
Daniel’s head snapped up.
“On what grounds?”
“She claimed there was evidence Noah was not your biological child.”
Daniel felt cold.
The fake DNA report.
The comments.
The rumors.
This wasn’t cruelty improvising itself.
It was strategy.
“My mother knew about this trust?”
“She was served notice when Noah was registered.”
“Did she sign for it?”
Samuel slid across a delivery receipt.
Margaret Carter.
Daniel recognized her handwriting instantly.
He almost stopped breathing.
She had known.
Before Claire died.
Before the rumors.
Before the fake laboratory report.
Daniel stood.
“I ordered a DNA test.”
Samuel looked at him.
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“Where are the results?”
“The lab said they mailed them.”
Samuel’s expression tightened.
“To the mansion?”
Daniel ran from the office.
He first went to the laboratory and obtained a certified duplicate.
Then he drove home.
When he entered the foyer, he heard Noah scream.
And saw his son falling.
Now, standing over Margaret with that DNA result on the marble, Daniel finally understood.

She had never hated Noah because she believed he wasn’t a Carter.
She hated him because she knew he was.
