Chapter 2 - The Woman Margaret Hated

Six months earlier, Daniel had buried his wife.

Claire Carter was thirty-three when a sudden cerebral aneurysm killed her.

One ordinary Tuesday morning, she kissed Daniel goodbye.

By lunchtime, she was unconscious.

By midnight, she was gone.

Noah had been nine months old.

Daniel barely remembered the funeral.

He remembered holding Noah.

He remembered Margaret taking the baby from his arms.

And he remembered his mother whispering:

“You can come home now.”

Home meant the Carter mansion in Greenwich.

Daniel resisted for three weeks.

Then exhaustion won.

Margaret had staff.

Security.

A nanny.

Twenty thousand square feet.

Daniel told himself Noah would be safer there.

At first, Margaret behaved beautifully.

She sat beside Noah’s crib.

Sent Daniel food.

Canceled meetings for him.

Handled condolence letters.

Then the questions started.

“Did Claire ever tell you who she was seeing?”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

Margaret sighed.

“Never mind.”

A week later:

“You know Noah doesn’t resemble you.”

Another week:

“Claire spent a lot of time with that pediatric surgeon.”

Daniel finally snapped.

“She was a nurse. She worked with doctors.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I’m only protecting you.”

Daniel hated himself for what happened next.

He began wondering.

Not believing.

Just wondering.

Grief made everything unstable.

Claire was dead.

He couldn’t ask her.

Margaret knew exactly when to plant another seed.

One afternoon she produced a photocopied laboratory report.

It claimed Daniel was excluded as Noah’s biological father.

Daniel stared at it until the words blurred.

“Where did you get this?”

“Claire ordered it.”

“No.”

“I found it among her things.”

Daniel refused to believe her.

But Margaret kept pushing.

“She knew.”

“No.”

“She trapped you.”

“Stop.”

“She made you raise another man’s child.”

Daniel tore the paper in half.

Then four pieces.

Then eight.

“Noah is my son.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“You can love him and still accept the truth.”

Daniel took Noah and walked away.

But that night, holding his sleeping baby, Daniel cried.

Not because he believed Margaret.

Because Claire wasn’t alive to defend herself.

Three days later, Daniel secretly contacted an accredited DNA laboratory.

He expected the result to settle the cruelty permanently.

He had no idea his mother was monitoring his mail.

And he definitely didn’t know she had already hired a lawyer to challenge Noah’s place in the Carter family trust.
