Chapter 79 - The Blue Door Again

Noah was forty-five when Daniel forgot where he had parked.

That was not alarming by itself.

At seventy-nine, everyone forgot parking spaces.

Then Daniel forgot a meeting with Lydia.

Then repeated a story twice during dinner.

Grace noticed before Noah admitted it.

“You should get him evaluated.”

“He's old.”

“Yes.”

“He's always repetitive.”

“Noah.”

He looked at her.

She knew the difference between humor and avoidance.

Daniel agreed to testing.

Mostly.

“I am surrounded by dictators.”

Noah smiled.

“You created this one.”

“Terrible parenting.”

The evaluation showed mild cognitive impairment.

Not dementia.

Maybe never dementia.

Maybe progression.

Maybe stability.

Uncertainty.

Noah hated uncertainty.

His entire family history was people reacting badly to uncertainty.

Paternity.

Trusts.

Contamination.

Health.

Control.

The doctor explained.

“We monitor.”

Noah wanted certainty.

The doctor could not give it.

Daniel looked at him afterward.

“You're making the face.”

“What face?”

“Control.”

Noah laughed.

“You started that.”

“No. You invented a Margaret face for me.”

“Different face.”

Daniel smiled.

Then:

“Don't organize my decline before it happens.”

Noah stopped.

Daniel's voice softened.

“I know how you are.”

“I want to help.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

“Ask.”

Not decide.

Ask.

Noah nodded.

“What do you want?”

“To keep living at home.”

“Okay.”

“To keep working at the Fund two mornings a week.”

“Okay.”

“To keep driving.”

Noah hesitated.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“We need to talk about that.”

“Dictator.”

“Safety.”

“Margaret said that.”

Noah flinched.

Daniel immediately regretted it.

“Bad joke.”

“No.”

Noah breathed.

“Important joke.”

They looked at each other.

Protection could become control quietly.

Even when love was real.

Especially when fear was real.

They negotiated.

Driving evaluation.

Daytime only initially.

Regular reassessment.

Daniel hated it.

Agreed anyway.

Months later, Daniel walked through the Open Door Center.

The blue door opened automatically now.

He complained.

“Door should be a door.”

Noah laughed.

“Accessibility.”

“Technology removes drama.”

“Good.”

They entered the old mansion space.

Children colored near reception.

Families met attorneys.

The central ramp glowed with afternoon light.

Daniel stopped near the place where the marble staircase had once stood.

“Do you know where we are?”

Noah asked.

Daniel looked offended.

“Yes.”

Noah immediately felt ashamed.

Daniel saw it.

“It's okay.”

“No.”

“It is.”

“I shouldn't test you.”

Daniel touched his arm.

“You're scared.”

Noah looked away.

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Now you know what parenting felt like.”

Noah laughed despite himself.

They sat together.

No documents.

May you like

No test result on the table between them.

Just time.
