Chapter 77 - The First Clean Well

Five years after remediation began, monitoring well BG-41 showed contaminant concentrations below the long-term target for the fourth consecutive sampling period.
One well.
Out of dozens.
Not victory.
Evidence of movement.
Briar Glen held no parade.
Nora brought donuts to the monitoring lab.
Carol brought tomatoes.
The state engineer gave a presentation nobody understood fully.
Jack Keller, now in college studying environmental engineering, translated for his grandmother.
“So?”
Carol asked.
“So the cleanup is working.”
“All of it?”
“No.”
“Then why are we celebrating?”
Jack smiled.
“Because one thing got better.”
Carol considered.
“Fine.”
Noah attended with Daniel.
Daniel was seventy-six.
His cane was no longer temporary.
Noah had stopped teasing him.
Mostly.
Jack approached.
“Remember me?”
Noah smiled.
“You asked if falling down stairs made my dad nicer.”
Daniel groaned.
Jack laughed.
“I was eleven.”
“You were rude.”
“I was correct.”
Daniel pointed his cane.
“Environmental engineers are becoming a problem in this family.”
Nora smiled.
“My father would be proud.”
Jack had chosen the field because of Briar Glen.
Not out of revenge.
Curiosity.
Repair.
Noah liked that.
They walked toward monitoring well BG-41.
Small metal cap.
Nothing beautiful.
No dramatic fountain of pure water.
Just numbers trending downward.
Daniel touched the rail beside the path.
“Funny.”
“What?”
“All those years, our family thought legacy meant buildings with our name.”
Noah looked at the well.
“And?”
May you like
Daniel smiled.
“Maybe legacy is a graph somebody else gets to watch improve.”
