Chapter 12 - The Trial

Margaret’s trial began four months later.
Daniel sat behind the prosecutors.
Noah stayed home.
Daniel refused to make his son a courtroom prop.
The defense attacked Daniel first.
His slap.
His grief.
His anger.
A photograph showed Margaret on the marble floor.
Her broken pearl necklace scattered around her.
“Did you strike your sixty-three-year-old mother?”
“Yes.”
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Hard enough to knock her down?”
“Yes.”
“Would you describe that as violent?”
Daniel looked at the jury.
“I would describe it as wrong.”
Margaret’s attorney paused.
Daniel continued.
“I should have picked up my son and called police without touching her.”
Margaret looked surprised.
Daniel wasn’t defending the slap.
He was owning it.
“But,” Daniel continued, “my mistake after seeing my son fall does not change what happened before I entered that house.”
The prosecutor played the security video.
The courtroom became silent.
Margaret’s voice:
“You weren’t supposed to exist.”
Then:
“A bastard like you doesn’t belong in this house.”
Daniel looked down.
He couldn’t watch.
The video stopped.
The prosecutor introduced the certified DNA result.
Then the fake emails.
Then the trust documents.
Then Claire’s preserved messages.
Then Henry’s recording.
Finally Victor Lang testified about the money.
Piece by piece, the story became impossible to deny.
Margaret had known Noah was likely Daniel’s son.
She manufactured doubt anyway.
Why?
Because the descendant trust placed fifty-one percent of Carter Global beyond her control.
When Margaret testified, she tried one final story.
“I was afraid Daniel was being manipulated.”
“By a fifteen-month-old?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“By Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Claire was dead when you kicked Noah.”
Margaret went silent.
The prosecutor moved closer.
“Mrs. Carter, who was manipulating Daniel then?”
No answer.
The jury deliberated for six hours.
Daniel waited in a courthouse hallway holding Claire’s old letter.
When everyone was called back, Margaret entered with her head high.
The verdicts began.
Guilty.
Guilty.
Guilty.
Then the charge relating to Noah.
Guilty.
Margaret’s face finally collapsed.
May you like
Not when the jury convicted her of financial crimes.
When she realized Daniel did not turn around to look at her.
