Chapter 1 - The Message Linda Couldn't Take Back

The cast-iron pan hit my mother's head before I could reach her.

One second, Mom was sitting at my kitchen table.

The next, Vanessa swung the pan in one brutal motion.

Mom toppled sideways.

Her chair scraped across the hardwood. Food scattered across the floor. The pan landed beside her with a heavy clang.

Vanessa looked down at my eighty-year-old mother.

"You need to know your place, you old hag."

Something inside me snapped.

I ran across the kitchen and drove my foot into Vanessa's side.

She went sprawling.

"MOM! OPEN YOUR EYES, MOM!"

I dropped beside Margaret Carter—the woman who had raised me alone after my father died, who still apologized when she needed help carrying groceries.

Her eyes fluttered.

She was breathing.

Barely.

I supported her head and carefully turned her onto her side.

Behind me, Vanessa pushed herself up.

Instead of looking frightened by what she'd done, she pointed at Mom.

"She finally knows her place."

I stood.

I slapped Vanessa so hard she staggered into the counter.

Then I grabbed my phone to call 911.

Before I could dial, a message appeared.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the sender.

Linda Carter.

My mother-in-law.

And the first line made every hair on my arms rise.

You weren't supposed to hit her in front of Rachel.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Linda was standing near the staircase.

Her face had gone completely white.

"Did you plan this?"

Linda lunged for my phone.

I jerked it away.

Her fingertips barely missed it.

And that was when I understood something far more terrifying than Vanessa losing her temper.

Vanessa hadn't attacked my mother because she was angry.

Someone had expected something to happen to Mom that afternoon.

And Linda was terrified I had just discovered what.

👉 What Linda sent next would make me realize the attack on my mother hadn't started in that kitchen.
