Chapter 7 - The Blue Recipe Book

The recipe book wasn't in Mom's apartment.
We searched every cabinet.
Every box.
Every drawer.
Nothing.
Then Mom remembered Linda borrowing several cookbooks for a church fundraiser months earlier.
Daniel drove to Linda's house.
He didn't go inside secretly.
He called from the driveway and demanded that his mother return Margaret's property.
Linda denied having it.
Then Daniel reminded her that Mom could make a formal report identifying the missing items.
Ten minutes later, Linda appeared with a cardboard box.
"These are the only things Margaret left here."
The blue recipe book was at the bottom.
Linda claimed she hadn't noticed it.
I didn't believe her.
Neither did Daniel.
Inside the back cover was a yellowed envelope.
Dad's handwriting was on the front.
For Margaret and Rachel.
My hands shook.
Inside were copies of the original trust documents and a letter explaining why Dad had kept the acreage.
He believed the area would eventually be developed.
He wanted Mom to have security.
After Mom's death, her remaining interest would pass to me.
That explained Linda's urgency.
Mom was the current beneficiary.
I was next.
Linda was neither.
But there was something else tucked inside.
A business card.
The card belonged to a land broker.
On the back, in recent handwriting, someone had written:
Offer could exceed $5M. Need beneficiary resolved before October closing.
Mom hadn't written it.
Neither had I.
Daniel stared at the handwriting.
"I've seen that before."
He opened his phone and found a birthday card Linda had sent him.
The handwriting appeared strikingly similar.
Still, Melissa warned us not to treat resemblance as proof.
Then she noticed something more useful.
A faint indentation on the envelope.
Numbers.
Mom retrieved a pencil and paper, but we didn't rub or alter the original. We photographed it under angled light instead.
It looked like part of a phone number.
Daniel recognized the last four digits.
Vanessa's.
That night, Vanessa finally agreed to meet.
But she had one condition.
"Linda can't know."
"Why?"
Vanessa's answer was almost a whisper.
May you like
"Because the pan wasn't the first thing she asked me to do."
👉 Vanessa was finally ready to describe the first stage of Linda's plan—and it explained why Margaret had begun doubting her own memory.
