Chapter 3 - What Margaret Refused to Sign

"What did they want you to sign?"

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

"Mom—"

"They wouldn't let me read everything."

That frightened me more than any answer could have.

Mom explained in fragments.

Linda had started visiting while I was at work.

At first, she brought groceries.

Then forms.

Vanessa sometimes came with her.

They told Mom the documents were necessary because she was getting older.

Medical releases.

Bank paperwork.

Insurance forms.

Mom signed two harmless-looking pages.

Then she noticed something.

"My old house."

I stared at her.

"What old house?"

"The one your father and I bought."

I thought she was confused.

My childhood home had been sold after Dad died.

At least, that was what I'd always believed.

Mom squeezed my fingers.

"Your father didn't sell all the land."

She explained that the original property had included seventeen undeveloped acres behind the house.

After Dad died, the house itself was sold.

The land wasn't.

He had placed it in a family trust.

Mom had never touched it.

Neither had I.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it wasn't worth much then."

"Then?"

Mom looked away.

"Linda told me developers have been calling."

My chest tightened.

"How much is it worth now?"

"I don't know."

But Linda apparently did.

Mom said the papers Vanessa brought contained the words assignment of beneficial interest.

Mom refused to sign.

After that, their kindness changed.

Linda began telling her she was forgetful.

Vanessa started calling her confused.

Then small things disappeared.

Her medication organizer.

Her bank statements.

Her house keys.

Mom had assumed she was misplacing them.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Neither was I.

A nurse entered before we could continue.

She told me Mom had a concussion and needed close monitoring, but there was no skull fracture.

Relief nearly folded me in half.

Then my phone vibrated.

My husband, Daniel, was calling.

I answered immediately.

"Rachel, Mom says you attacked Vanessa."

I went silent.

Linda had already reached him.

And she had changed the story.

👉 I thought the land was what Linda wanted—until Daniel revealed what his mother had been telling him about Margaret for months.
