Chapter 13 - The Camera Linda Forgot
The camera didn't show every room.
It didn't capture some perfect movie-style confession.
What it showed was more believable.
Patterns.
Linda arriving with folders.
Vanessa arriving shortly afterward.
Mom opening the door looking increasingly uncomfortable.
And one afternoon, clear audio from the hallway.
Mom's voice:
"I told you I'm not signing that."
Linda answered:
"You're making this harder than it needs to be."
Then Vanessa:
"Just sign the damn paper."
Mom told them to leave.
Linda didn't.
Instead, she lowered her voice.
"If Rachel sees how confused you've become, she'll agree with me."
Mom replied instantly.
"I'm not confused."
That sentence broke me.
Because Mom had known.
She had known they were trying to make her doubt herself.
She simply hadn't known why.
Another recording showed Vanessa leaving Mom's apartment carrying the blue recipe book.
Linda followed.
That connected the missing book directly to them.
There were also timestamps corresponding with several days Mom reported missing keys and documents.
Again, no single clip proved every allegation.
Together, however, the evidence formed a coherent timeline.
Linda's petition seeking control over Mom's affairs fell apart.
The court declined to hand her the authority she wanted, and Mom retained control of her decisions and property.
Outside the courtroom, Linda approached us.
Her confidence was gone.
"Daniel."
He stepped between her and Mom.
"Don't."
"I'm still your mother."
"And Margaret is Rachel's mother."
Linda's eyes filled.
"You don't understand what I sacrificed for this family."
Daniel stared at her.
"You tried to take another family's future."
Linda looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the old arrogance return.
"You think you've won because of some recordings?"
I didn't answer.
Because the financial investigation wasn't finished.
And neither was the assault case.
Linda walked away believing the worst evidence had already surfaced.
She was wrong.
The original transfer document had finally been examined more closely.
