Chapter 2 - The First Lie

I dialed 911 before Linda could try for my phone again.

"Rachel, you're misunderstanding this."

"Back away from me."

Vanessa pressed one hand against her cheek.

"It was an accident."

I stared at her.

"You picked up a pan and hit an eighty-year-old woman."

"She provoked me."

Mom made a weak sound behind us.

That ended the argument.

I knelt beside her while the dispatcher kept me talking.

Linda suddenly became helpful.

Too helpful.

She grabbed a towel. Moved a chair. Told Vanessa to calm down.

Then she reached for the cast-iron pan.

"Don't touch that."

Linda froze.

I had never heard my own voice sound like that.

She slowly withdrew her hand.

When the paramedics arrived, I told them exactly what I had seen.

Vanessa tried to interrupt.

Linda tried to soften it.

I didn't let either woman finish.

At the hospital, Mom was taken for imaging and observation. I sat outside her room with dried food on my trousers and my hands trembling around my phone.

Then I opened Linda's message again.

There was more beneath the preview.

You weren't supposed to hit her in front of Rachel. We needed her signature first.

Signature?

I searched the thread.

Nothing else.

Linda had apparently deleted earlier messages from her side, but this one had come from her number to mine by mistake.

She had meant to send it to Vanessa.

I stared through the hospital-room window at my mother.

For three weeks, Linda had been strangely interested in Mom's "estate planning."

She had recommended a lawyer.

She had offered to organize paperwork.

She had even driven Mom to the bank once when I was working.

I had thought she was being kind.

Then Mom opened her eyes.

I rushed inside.

"Mom?"

Her fingers closed weakly around mine.

She looked frightened.

Not confused.

Frightened.

"Rachel..."

"I'm here."

She swallowed painfully.

Then she whispered something I wasn't prepared for.

"They've been asking me to sign things."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

Mom looked toward the doorway as if she were afraid someone might be listening.

"Linda."

A pause.

May you like

"And Vanessa."

👉 Mom's next words revealed that the mysterious paperwork involved something our family believed had disappeared twenty-two years ago.
