Chapter 8 - They Made Her Think She Was Forgetting
Vanessa met us in Melissa's office.
She wouldn't look at Mom.
I was glad.
Mom shouldn't have had to comfort the woman who hurt her.
Vanessa admitted that Linda had recruited her months earlier.
At first, the instructions seemed small.
Move Margaret's keys.
Hide a bill.
Take her medication organizer, then put it somewhere unusual.
Repeat a conversation and insist Margaret had forgotten it.
My stomach turned.
They weren't exploiting Mom's confusion.
They were creating it.
"Why?"
Vanessa stared at the table.
"Linda said if Margaret looked incompetent, someone could manage things for her."
"Someone meaning Linda?"
Vanessa nodded.
Mom began to cry silently.
I reached for her hand.
Vanessa claimed she had believed nobody would actually be hurt.
I stared at her.
"You hit her with iron cookware."
Her face collapsed.
"I know."
"No. You know now because there are consequences."
Vanessa then admitted Linda had promised her a share of the money after the land was sold.
But when Mom repeatedly refused to sign, Linda became desperate.
The developer's offer had a deadline.
Linda needed control before it expired.
"What were you supposed to do the day you attacked her?"
"Scare her."
Mom flinched.
Vanessa finally looked at her.
"Linda said make her understand that saying no had consequences."
Daniel stood so abruptly his chair scraped backward.
"My mother told you that?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Do you have proof?"
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She placed an old phone on the table.
"I didn't trust her, so I kept everything."
Messages.
Voicemails.
Payment discussions.
Instructions.
But when Vanessa unlocked the device, her expression changed.
The conversation thread was gone.
"What happened?" I asked.
"I don't know."
Then she remembered.
Linda had held that phone in the kitchen two days before the attack.
Vanessa had assumed she was checking a photograph.
Linda hadn't just been planning.
She had been cleaning up.
But she had missed one thing.
Vanessa's phone automatically backed up voice recordings to a cloud account.
