Chapter 5 - The Company Behind the Smile

Daniel stopped defending his mother.

Not completely.

But enough.

We took the document to an attorney who had no connection to Linda.

Her name was Melissa Grant.

She didn't promise miracles.

She didn't declare the document fraudulent after glancing at it.

She did something better.

She started asking questions.

Who prepared it?

Who witnessed it?

Was it notarized?

Had anything actually been transferred?

The answer to the last question was no.

Not yet.

That mattered.

The Carter Family Trust still controlled the land.

But Melissa discovered something else.

A development company had offered to purchase the seventeen acres.

The proposed price made me stare at her.

$4.8 million.

Mom covered her mouth.

Linda had known.

She had never told us.

Red Maple Holdings had been created seven months earlier.

Linda was its manager.

And according to the transfer document, Mom's beneficial interest would have moved to Red Maple for a fraction of the property's potential value.

$40,000.

Mom started crying.

"I would never do that to Rachel."

I took her hand.

"I know."

Melissa cautioned us.

A suspicious document wasn't enough to prove who created it.

We needed records.

Witnesses.

Communications.

And we needed to protect Mom immediately.

So Mom revoked every authorization she had previously signed and notified the trust administrator in writing that she disputed any transfer.

That afternoon, Linda arrived at the hospital carrying flowers.

She smiled at Daniel.

Then at me.

Then at Mom.

"Margaret, I'm so relieved you're okay."

Mom's fingers tightened around mine.

Linda placed the flowers down.

I slid the Red Maple document onto the table.

Her smile disappeared for less than a second.

Then returned.

"I've never seen that."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"That's interesting."

Linda turned toward him.

"Why?"

"Because I found it in your desk."

For the first time, Linda had no immediate answer.

Then Mom spoke.

Quietly.

Clearly.

"You told me Rachel wanted me to sign it."

I turned to Linda.

She hadn't just tried to steal from my mother.

May you like

She had used my name to do it.

👉 But the most damaging witness wasn't Margaret—it was the person Linda had assumed would remain loyal to her.
